[SEER] Model of Creative Practice


From Greene’s 42 Creativity Models, I began to work on a synthesis to what I initially called the Self-Making Model.  After some thought/work what has finally settled in as feeling right is the Self Extension and Experience Realization [SEER] model of creative practice synthesized from Self Type 33 – Extended Self-Development and Mind Type: 41 – Experience Realization Forms.

As a combination of a self and mind type of creativity model, would be taken as starting point to address the relationship between art and consciousness.  It simply gives a name to the following type of artist:

  1. Th[is model of] artist should be at a level of practice that is both self initiated and goal directed, having set ideas or concepts to focus on for the making of art. 
  2. The artwork is approached in a questioning manner that is of a personal nature with an awareness of attempting to answer internal questions.
  3. The artist is engaged in a continuing process of investigating the source and meaning of the tangible objects produced, attempting to objectively analyse moments of the creative process that are deeply subjective. 

This arguably includes most fine artists.  The SEER Model can in future be investigated cross-referentially with other creativity models from each type, specifically:

Catalog: 4 – Darwinian Systems
Blend: 10 – Paradox Balancing
Social: 17 – Space Sharing (or Collaboration)
System: 23 – Adjacent Beyond
Purity: 25 – Subcreations

There are also the portions of this kind of practice that are illustrative of concepts of Extended Mind [Andy Clark] and Enactive Perception [Alva Noë].

3.1 SEER Model of Creative Practice

Self Type 33: The Extended Self Development Model

Greene begins the description of the Extended Self-Development with the observation that “[b]eing more of a person requires not being the simple product of what raised you. Something inside you made you a product of your own work and design, instead of a mere product of your various environments – Indeed, being a person means inventing your self, creating your self instead of letting your environments create you alone.  Being a person means creating your self.” The creative person carries this further by “creat[ing] a creative self type.”

Indeed, as a matter of fact, all creators succeed, by definition, in creating such a self. What is more, many creative people have testified to the satisfaction of how creative works speak for them to the world even when they, as people, are not around. The power of creative works to work instead of persons is one of the main attractions of the creative way of life. (Greene, 2001)

Mind Type 41: The Experience Realization Forms Model

“Some people tap into more direct, unmediated layers of experience, thought, and perception than non-creative people do.  Such people eventually try to give form to what they are experiencing.”While noting that many of these kinds of people are artists, Greene uses Einstein as an example of Experience Realization Forms.

Creation is, to these people, merely giving form to what they have already realized about what they experienced.  Einstein is a good example.  For him the most elemental explanations of physics, heard in schools, did not make sense.  He remember[ed] keenly exactly which concepts, how, did not make sense to him.  His memory of his own experiences of something not-making-sense became the basis of later imaginings of what might make sense there instead.  (Greene, 2001)

Synthesized Model: Self Extension and Experience Realization [SEER]

Green speculates that the self-development type may be underdetermined by “the elemental drive of people to distinguish themselves from one another.” He gives a less dynamic view of self-development than I would like:

The extended self development model of creativity extends self development to small democratic communities of immortalizing those selves through story telling and celebrating great deeds done.  As soon as this is said, readers will notice how much this captures of the satisfaction a creator gets from any one creative work released into the world-it becomes a deed that generates immortal stories that speak for the creator, extending his or her self, even after he or she dies. (Greene, 2001)

The need to synthesize a self and mind type model of creativity, besides the obviousness of the topic, is to take into account the process of creating not just the product. Again, I take the position that if one wants to focus on the intrinsic nature of art and its object, then it is necessary to make some effort to attend to the creators of such objects.  In an embodied mind framework it is given that a large portion of thinking is below cognitive awareness, so a process model would be needed as opposed to a solely verbal accounting of any artist intention or viewer reaction toward the final product.  In other words, a more internally dynamic model is needed – one that properly reflects the relationship between the artists and their creations, not the intentions of the artist for their creation’s relationship to a viewing public.
